Broken or fractured bones are a common problem in young and active pets, or those that escape from their yard and collide with a motor vehicle. Sometimes its just bad luck – jumping down from a height, or getting caught in a door blown shut by the wind….
Regardless of the cause, we’re here to help and we’ll get your pets leg fixed. Some of the solutions are simple such as casts or splints, but we also provide a full suite of orthopaedic surgical options for those that require them – pins, wires, plates and screws, and external fixators.
We perform 2-3 orthopaedic procedures per week and maintain a full supply of orthopaedic implants so that your pet does not have to wait for implants to be delivered from a capital city. That can be a huge benefit for your pet if it breaks a leg on Thursday night or over the weekend….. couriers generally can’t get the implants to you before Tuesday if you don’t already have them on hand. We provide many advanced orthopaedic procedures in house (arthrodesis or joint fusion, spinal fractures and surgery for disc disease, Hip Toggling for Hip Dislocation) when referral to a specialist is not physically or financially possible for the pet or owner.
We provide multiple surgical options for cruciate ligament disease in Dog Knees – Synthetic Ligament type repair (eg De Angelis, Fabello Tibial Suture, Isotoggle), Triple Tibial Osteotomy (TTO) and Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) as not all patients will benefit equally from any one procedure. The best procedure depends on their size, age weight, activity level and the recovery that the dog and owner want from the procedure. In almost all cases a TTO or TTA will provide a far more comfortable knee than a Synthetic Ligament type repair, and the dog’s return to athletic function is faster and more complete.
We also provide many second opinions on orthopaedic problems and can often provide more advanced surgical options which you may not have been aware were available locally.
