I was a farmers daughter in the North of England, so I have alway been around animals.  My natural strengths lie in problem solving and fixing things (usually in the pouring rain on the farm!) so for me becoming a vet seemed like a pretty obvious and logical choice of career.

Being a long way from home has meant that I don’t have my own pets with me, and I really miss the love and affection they freely give.  As a solution I do make sure I spend lots of time with everyone else’s (especially the nurse’s ginger coloured ones).  I have a natural affinity for anything with red or ginger hair, especially if they're naughty!  I enjoy encouraging the naughty behaviours and letting them have some “free time” before returning them to their rightful owners.  I might be inclined to be a bit more strict with my own pets, but being able to be the “fun aunty” is good too!

I have a passion for welfare and charity work in far flung parts of the globe - often where veterinary care is otherwise completely unavailable.  As part of this personal mission I have worked in the Cook Islands for the Esther Honey Foundation, in Nepal and Tibet with The Tibet Charity and also in Thailand.  These programs often involve desexing programs, rabies control programs and welfare work to improve the quality of life for animals in these remote and poor areas of the globe.  I am about to undertake another program in Africa this time, and am taking Mallory with me so she can experience this type of work too.

This type of work is very different to normal veterinary practice as it involves being resourceful and creative with limited resources.  There is no access to x-rays, ultrasound or laboratories, and often even minimal access to medical drugs like antibiotics.  In contrast though, there is nothing quite like performing surgery or vaccination clinics in a village square or field with a excited gaggle of onlookers!

Having worked in many practices in the UK and in Australia I have always been very impressed with the exceptional standards of care for the patients we treat at Better Pet Vets.  It is a very skilled and unique team and everyone works with the animals best interests at heart to get them healthy, well and pain free.

I am currently finishing my Royal Veterinary College Certificate in Advanced Small Animal Medicine and am enjoying the opportunities here to further my surgical knowledge, especially in orthopaedics.
