I decided to become a vet after a work experience placement at the end of high school.  I had always enjoyed biology and chemistry at school, and knew animals and especially pets enriched people’s lives.  I enjoyed using my hands to do things and enjoyed being in the outdoors.  My parents also taught me to help people whenever I could, and becoming a vet meant I could do all of these things as my life’s work, which is a pretty rare privilege.

After I graduated in 1998, I worked in a great Mixed Practice in country NSW for almost 3 years, followed by a year in Equine Racetrack practice in Melbourne, and then managed a 3 Vet Small Animal Hospital in Bayside Melbourne for almost 4 years.  After that I worked in Emergency and Critical Care for 2 + 1/2  years and enjoyed the challenge of critical care and also working with the Medical and Surgical Referral Specialists there.  During this time I met Holly and we decided to take an extended tour of the East coast of Australia - living out of a tent, camping and fishing and seeing some amazing parts of our great country.

We really liked Mackay as a regional centre and felt that we had something to offer with our skills and experience - bringing some of the metropolitan services out into regional areas has always been a goal of ours.

Holly and I established Better Pet Vets in May 2009, and it has been an intensely engaging and rewarding process, and we both take enormous pride in the level of care that the team provides.  The team is built upon trust and respect for one another, our clients, and our patients.

We enjoy the challenges of running a large and busy veterinary practice - having great staff and a great facility, balancing the costs of providing excellent care and advanced treatments while keeping these options affordable and accessible for our clients and ensuring our patients get the best results they can.

Outside work, I still really enjoy fishing but rarely get the time to do that unless I’m on holidays, so in my limited time off I have come back to playing golf (badly!).

After work I spend time with “Minty” my very busy Dalamatian who’s best skills include tail wagging and frisbee, but has an amazing knack for making you forget about anything that was making you stressed or unhappy within about 20 seconds.  Our animals are incredibly precious to us and so we understand how difficult it can be when your pet isn't well, because of that we’ll ensure they get the best of care and get back home to you ASAP.

I obtained my Australian and New Zealand Veterinary College Memberships in Medicine in 2003, and so I am a Consultant in Canine and Feline Medicine, and enjoy providing second opinions both within our practice, and for other clients who want to ensure a diagnosis is correct and they have all the options for making their pet healthy and well.

I am currently undertaking 2 years of advanced surgical training and study to sit my Surgical Memberships.  We already provide many advanced surgical procedures, both orthopaedic and soft tissue, to ensure our patients don’t have to have second best, and in many cases travel to Brisbane can be avoided.  Its always nice to be able to have your pet treated close to home.

I really look forward to meeting you at our practice and sharing your pet’s life with you.
